Postcard from Camp, Day Six: A painful session

Share

FOXBORO -- Day Six of Patriots training camp saw the intensity ratcheted up a bit during half-line and full-line running-game drills. One-on-ones (both for receivers and defensive backs as well as offensive and defensive linemen) were competitive as well.

There were a couple of injury concerns as the practice wore on as Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Matthew Slater and David Andrews all seemed to be dealing with physical ailments.

Here are the full notes from the day . . .

ATTENDANCE
* Duron Harmon, Mike Gillislee, James O'Shaughnessy, Malcolm Mitchell and Danny Amendola spent time on a lower field Wednesday. Amendola returned later to field to field punts.

* Cody Hollister, Josh Augusta and Andrew Jelks were not spotted at the session. Dont'a Hightower and Alan Branch remained on PUP.

* Matthew Slater, Chris Hogan (right leg) and David Andrews all appeared to come up gimpy at different points in practice. Andrews was slow to get up after one 11-on-11 rep but was back on the field after taking a break during a special teams period. Julian Edelman seemed to be a little off at times as well, but his participation in practice was not impacted.

NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS
* Rob Ninkovich was bouncing around the practice fields early. When he told younger players he would be around, he wasn't kidding. Three days into retirement, he's back on the field.

Curran: Vrabel, not Wolf, will be Pats' ‘final decision maker'

How Vrabel plans to steer Drake Maye's development in New England

* Geneo Grissom split the right tackle and guard to blow up a run play early in practice.

* Matt Lengel bent Derek Rivers nearly in half during an early run-game period.

* Marcus Cannon and Shaq Mason combined to open some big holes in the early run-game drill. They formed one of the top run-blocking right sides in the league in 2016 and  seem to have picked up where they left off.

* Cyrus Jones continued to field punts cleanly and seemed to be showing a little bit of confidence as he high-stepped past Jordan Richards during one return.

* When it comes to unknowns making the roster, they typically have to do it in the kicking game. Both Dwayne Thomas and Austin Carr seemed to have good reps covering punts. Carr is someone who has impressed occasionally on offense. If he can compete in two phases -- and if the Patriots continue to have injury issues at receiver -- he's someone to watch.

* Adam Butler seems to be getting a shot earlier in team drills. The defensive lineman out of Vanderbilt has shown pretty good quickness in one-on-one drills but doesn't have the size of Malcom Brown or Vincent Valentine.

* Laps: Geneo Grissom took a lap early during half-line drills. Matt Lengel was sent running during 11-on-11s for what was likely a false start.

1-ON-1 NOTES
* Malcolm Butler jumped a route so well that Jacoby Brissett wouldn't even throw it.
* Chris Hogan made a diving catch and was slow to get up, though he seemed no worse for the wear. He's been getting a lot of work recently with receiver depth hurting.
* Austin Carr made an impressive grab on a ball that looked like it might've been slightly overthrown.
* Kenny Moore broke up a completion to Edelman. Impressive for him to even get Edelman in coverage. To stick with him and break up the throw? Not bad.
* Jacob Hollister ran a nice route, used his leverage and made a diving catch while working on the team's top tight-end defender Patrick Chung.

* Andrews beat Vincent Valentine.
* Guy got good push on Mason.
* Ealy was sealed off by Cannon.
* McClellin beat Waddle.
* Wise made quick work of Douglas.
* Butler raced by King.
* Grissom beat Fleming easily with an inside spin.
* McDermott and Langi battle to a draw.
* McClellin turned the corner on Solder, but Solder seemed to have the angle.
* Thuney stopped Flowers cold.
* Brown powered through Mason.
* Cannon walled off Van Noy.
* Waddle ate up Rivers.
* Karras gets the best of Guy.
* Valentine swam by Croston.
