Postcard from Camp, Day Five: Pats show some fight

FOXBORO -- During Day 5 of Patriots training camp, players were back in full pads. The crowd in attendance was noticeably smaller than it had been for the first four days of work, but there was a good amount of intensity coming from the players -- particularly Julian Edelman and Stephon Gilmore.

Here's what we saw . . .

ATTENDANCE
* Duron Harmon was not present at Tuesday's session. He's dealing with a lower body injury. Indications are it's not considered serious. Cody Hollister was also missing.

* Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell began the session with their teammates, but both headed for the lower field soon after the workout began.

NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS
* Cameron Fleming and Ted Karras got some reps in front of Tom Brady. Fleming has played both tackle spots. Karras has served as the center behind David Andrews.

* Both Eric Rowe and Jonathan Jones saw time inside during early 11-on-11 periods. The Patriots could simply play matchups in there. For example, Rowe played Hogan (a bigger slot when he's there) man-to-man on the inside. Jones played Edelman (a smaller slot) man-to-man. Those two seem to be vying for the No. 3 corner role, but they could share it depending on the opponent's personnel.

* James O'Shaughnessy walked off the practice field about an hour into the session with head trainer Jim Whalen.

* Belichick spent some time working with Kony Ealy, Deatrich Wise and Trey Flowers as they polished their punt-blocking skills. Belichick seemed to be emphasizing the angle at which players should be reaching when going for the football should they break through the line of scrimmage. Ealy did not do much in terms of special teams in Carolina, Belichick explained during a presser before Tuesday's practice, but the Patriots are trying to find out what he can give them in that regard during camp.

* During 7-on-7s, Belichick stood over the center with a blocking pad in hand. He'd occasionally whip it at the quarterback to mimic a pass-rusher.

* Laps: Harvey Langi both were sent off for cheating during one-on-one drills. The entire defense took a lap during 11-on-11 work for what looked like a substitution issue. Joe Thuney took a lap during 11-on-11s for a false start. Ted Karras and Jimmy Garoppolo took a lap after a fumbled snap during 11-on-11s; Tom Brady filled in for two plays in Garoppolo's absence.

* Julian Edelman and Stephon Gilmore got into it for some reason following an incompletion. They went at each other aggressively, and both players' helmets ended up flying off as they rolled around on the ground. Both players were removed from practice by Bill Belichick, though they went back to the locker room in a staggered fashion so that they wouldn't have to deal with each other.

* Amendola returned to practice at the very end to field some punts with Will Likely, Chris Hogan, Cyrus Jones and Brandin Cooks. He appeared to be moving fine.

ONE-ON-ONE NOTES
* Gilmore broke up a short throw intended for Cooks.
* McCourty jumped a route for a pick.
* Edelman broke off Eric Rowe on a long-developing route for a long completion.
* Gronkowski dropped one over the middle.
* Kenny Moore got his hands on one but Hogan grabbed it. Moore seems to have a knack for being around the football.  

* Marcus Cannon and Kony Ealy battled to a draw.
* David Andrews stonewalled Malcom Brown.
