FOXBORO -- The Patriots took the field for their eight training camp practice on Friday afternoon. Here's everything you need to know from the session.
WEATHER
Little bit of a cloudy day, but the sun peeked through for most of the session. Temperatures hovered around 80 degrees,
WHAT THEY WORE
Players were back in full pads. Dont'a Hightower and quarterbacks Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo wore red non-contact jerseys.
ATTENDANCE
The numbers continue to dwindle at Patriots practice. Scott Chandler, who appeared to deal with some kind of leg ailment on Thursday, was not present. Julian Edelman did not practice for the fourth consecutive session. Aaron Dobson was missing from his second straight practice, and Brian Tyms missed his third straight session. Marcus Cannon, Tyler Gaffney, Dion Lewis, Matthew Wells, Darius Fleming and Joe Vellano were also not spotted. Linebacker Eric Martin and tight end Jimmay Mundine (who left Thursday's session early) did not practice.
Brandon LaFell, Ryan Wendell, Matthew Slater, Chris Jones, Dane Fletcher and Chris White remained on the physically unable to perform list. Matt Flynn, Caylin Hauptmann and Alan Branch remained on the non-football injury list and did not practice.
WHAT WE SAW
* LeGarrette Blount went down early in the session with apparent right knee injury. He walked with trainers to an adjacent field and could be seen flexing his leg. He later walked off the practice field with team staff.
* Rookie guard Shaq Mason continued to have some difficulty in one on one pass-blocking drills. Coming from a program that focused on the running game, Mason is still working on the pass-blocking aspect of his game. About an hour into the practice he appeared to have a good rep against Chandler Jones, slowing down one of New England's best pass-rushers for a beat.
* Danny Amendola made what might have been the best catch of training camp during one-on-one drills. On a pass from Garoppolo, Amendola laid out in the end zone with one hand and reeled in the throw. As he popped up from the turf, in one motion, he threw the ball into the stands to celebrate. The catch earned Amendola a pat on the helmet from receivers coach Chad O'Shea. With many of his fellow receivers out injured, Amendola has consistently given good effort and shown dependable hands through camp.
* Brady threw his second interception of training camp on Friday when Patrick Chung got his hands in the way of a pass intended for Rob Gronkowski. Devin McCourty pounced and took it the other way.
* Garoppolo was intercepted once by Duron Harmon on what appeared to be an ill-advised throw across his body as he was flushed from the pocket by linebacker Rufus Johnson. Garoppolo was nearly picked again when he overthrew tight end Michael Hoomanawanui and the ball bounced off of safety Nate Ebner's hands.
* James White fumbled one carry during a period focused on interior runs. It was recovered by rookie Geneo Grissom, which drew a big reaction from the defense. White was made to run a lap. White also had a drop early in practice, but he helped make up for it with a difficult one-handed grab in the flat on a throw from Brady.
* Malcom Brown beat tight end Jake Bequette during the interior run period to help snuff out a run attempt. Tough matchup for the one-time defensive end tasked with stopping the Patriots first-round pick.
* Cameron Fleming continued to get the majority of the reps at right tackle with Cannon out and Sebastian Vollmer still limited. He was mostly solid, it seemed, but he appeared to get the bad end of matchups with Dekoda Watson and Jabaal Sheard.
* Eric Kettani fumbled one carry during an interior-run period. Xzavier Dickson appeared to force the fumble and recover it. Kettani was made to run a lap as a result.
* What was once a sizable group taking snaps off to the side with Brady during special teams periods has been whittled by injury. Rob Gronkowski was the lone player working with Brady during the side session on Friday.
* Special teams periods focused on punt. Undrafted rookie Chris Harper got a chance to return but fumbled one.
* Gronkowski spent an extended period of time chatting with officials. It appeared as though they were talking about positioning for a pass while avoiding an offensive pass interference call. Officials spent their second of three days with the Patriots on Friday.
* Brown spent some time on the sidelines with his helmet off. He removed his left shoe and appeared to be tending to some kind of left foot or ankle tweak. Patriots coach Bill Belichick went over to check on the first-round pick at one point. Brown remained on the field but he appeared limited.
* Stork also appeared limited at the end of practice, ceding the center snaps to Josh Kline and undrafted rookie center David Andrews.
* We saw more of New England's quick defensive front on Friday. At one point, Jabaal Sheard, Dominique Easley, Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones all on the line during an 11-on-11 period, with Easley and Jones on the inside. Ninkovich also played some inside, staying with Bequette as the tight end ran down the field.
* Rookie defensive lineman Trey Flowers and Antonio Johnson continue to get good reps on the defensive line. Both players worked alongside one another for a stretch. Brown (before he stopped practicing) and Sealver Siliga also took up space on the inside. It was a front that appeared to be constantly shifting in terms of both scheme and personnel depending on the situation.
WHO'S HOT
* Amendola's ability to stay on the field when others have gone down with injuries, never mind his ridiculous one-handed catch on Friday, lands him here.
* Flowers is a player who has showed up in multiple spots and has flashed with his consistently strong effort. One on snap Friday, he appeared to gain some ground on left tackle Nate Solder with a shot to Solder's chest -- no easy task against the 6-foot-8, 325-pounder. Flowers was noted as a high-energy player coming out of Arkansas, and that aspect of his game has stood out through eight camp practices.
* Chung has one of the most difficult jobs in sports on his hands when he's asked to defend Gronkowski one-on-one. Though Gronkowski still caught his share of passes, Chung was solid at different points of the practice. One deflection led to an interception, and he blanketed Gronkowski on another attempt in the end zone that fell incomplete.
* Jabaal Sheard has been one of the most consistent defenders on the team to this point in camp. I haven't seen him get completely swallowed up in a one-on-one drill yet, and he seems to win the majority of his matchups. In 11-on-11 play, he also appears very difficult to block. If quarterbacks were allowed to be hit, Sheard would have his share.
WHO'S NOT
* White had a relatively difficult day with a fumble and a drop coming early. Give him credit for sticking his nose into Jamie Collins' chest in pass-protection, but Collins -- who out-weighs White by about 50 pounds -- got the better end of that collision.
* Undrafted rookie free agent Chris Harper's best chance of making the Patriots would be to find a dual-threat role as a receiver and a special teamer. After muffing a punt and dropping a pass from Garoppolo, Harper will look to have a better day on Saturday.
