Patriots waive QB Cody Kessler amid flurry of roster moves Tuesday

The New England Patriots had a busy day at practice with multiple players coming and going.

Among the departures is quarterback Cody Kessler, who was waived by the Patriots on Tuesday, per the league's transactions wire.

Kessler was signed to the Patriots' 53-man roster on Sept. 25, a few days before the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills in Week 4. Kessler served as the third-string quarterback behind backup Jarrett Stidham and starter Tom Brady. The USC product was inactive for all three games New England played since he signed.

The Patriots needed to make room on their roster for the addition of tight ends Benjamin Watson and Eric Tomlinson. Kessler was a logical player to be cut because the Patriots don't need a third quarterback when depth at other positions is being tested by injuries.

Here's a list of the roster moves made by the Patriots on Tuesday:

Waiver requests
Cody Kessler, QB

Free agent signings
Eric Tomlinson, TE
Benjamin Watson, TE
