New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty raised many eyebrows during Super Bowl Opening Night with his answer to a question asking if he'd retire if the Pats beat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII on Sunday.
“I don’t know for sure,” McCourty said Monday night. “I do look at it if we can win this game, win it with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that would top that. I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple of days with these guys.”
The veteran safety was asked Wednesday during a press conference if he's thought about retiring, and he was very clear with his answer.
"No, I haven't," McCourty said. "I've been focused on this season. It's been a lot of fun this year. We've battled through different things, ups and downs of the team. Being here now, in my ninth year, being able to go out with these guys everyday and work, coming off tough losses, coming off big wins, and just kind of ramping back up and getting ready to go. Getting to play in the last game, being back in Foxboro was awesome, but then being here this week hanging with the guys off the field and putting in the work to prepare and be ready to go Sunday has been a lot of fun."
McCourty is in his ninth season and Sunday will be his fourth Super Bowl appearance. He's already won two championships with the Patriots and has a résumé worthy of future induction to the team's Hall of Fame.
There's not a lot left for him to accomplish in the NFL, but playing with his brother Jason this season definitely seems to have made this particular playoff run extra special. McCourty still ranks among the top-tier of safeties in the league, but it would be hard to blame him for retiring if the Patriots lift the Lombardi Trophy after beating the Rams.
