UPDATE: The Patriots announced Monday afternoon that they have released Eddie Pleasant

The Patriots will veteran release safety Eddie Pleasant, ESPN's Field Yates reports.

Pleasant, 29, signed with the Patriots just before the start of camp. He played six seasons with the Texans after signing with Houston as an undrafted rookie in 2012. He was one featured as one of Phil's Perry's longshots to make the team earlier in camp.

Third-year safety Jordan Richards appears to have won the competition for a backup spot. Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon and special-teamer Nate Ebner are the Pats other safeties. Jason McCourty, who saw time at safety for the first time in the preseason loss to the Panthers on Friday night, could be in the mix as well.
