Before he played one NFL snap, Patriots practice squad offensive lineman J.J. Dielman has retired.
Dielman, a 25-year-old center out of Utah, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round in 2017. After signing a four-year contract with the Bengals, Dielman bounced around between the Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, and Seattle Seahawks practice squads. He last played for the Rams.
The Patriots signed Dielman last week to add depth to the offensive line in training camp. The retirement leaves the Patriots with an open spot on their 90-man roster.
Dielman joins Jared Veldheer and Brian Schwenke as the third offensive lineman to retire while on the Patriots roster this year. Despite the retirements, the Patriots should have a solid interior offensive line with Shaq Mason, Joe Thuney and David Andrews.
