Patriots' Mohamed Sanu out of boot, beginning rehab from ankle surgery

The New England Patriots need a healthy Mohamed Sanu in 2020, and he's trending in that direction.

The Patriots wide receiver is out of his walking boot and has begun rehab on his injured left ankle, NFL Media's Mike Giardi reported Wednesday.

Sanu, who underwent ankle surgery on March 3, is working with trainer and footwork specialist Seth Minter, who posted an Instagram story video of Sanu beginning his rehab in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Sanu suffered the injury on a punt return in just his third game as a Patriot, a Week 11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 30-year-old only missed one week but wasn't the same upon his return, recording three catches or fewer in each of New England's last five regular-season games.

Sanu finished 2019 with 59 catches for 520 yards, his lowest total since 2015. The Patriots gave up a 2020 second-round draft pick to acquire Sanu from the Falcons last October -- Atlanta dealt that pick to the Baltimore Ravens, who used it on Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins -- so they clearly believe he can contribute when healthy.

New England desperately needs Sanu to deliver, though: He and Julian Edelman are the only two returning Patriots wideouts with more than one year of NFL experience and likely will be working with an inexperienced starting quarterback in Jarrett Stidham.

Sanu was already finding ways to stay sharp prior to his surgery, so perhaps that hard work will pay off in 2020.
