New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins legend Nick Buoniconti died Tuesday night at age 78.
The Patriots confirmed the news of his death Wednesday. The former linebacker was a Springfield, Mass., native and played college football at the University of Notre Dame.
Buoniconti was drafted in the 13th round (102nd overall) by the Boston Patriots in 1962 and played the first seven seasons of his career with the then-AFL franchise. He spent the last seven seasons of his career with the Miami Dolphins and won two Super Bowl titles, including the franchise's undefeated 17-0 season in 1972. He's also a member of Miami's team honor roll.
Buoniconti was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. He was a five-time first-team All-AFL selection, a three-time second-team All-AFL selection, a two-time NFL All-Pro selection and was named to two Pro Bowl teams.
He tallied 32 interceptions and six fumble recoveries in 183 career games.
