NFL rumors: Patriots not convinced Cardinals QB Josh Rosen will be traded?

The New England Patriots reportedly are among the NFL teams "very interested" in trading for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen, but it takes two sides to make a deal.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports recently reported on the level interest in Rosen around the league, and it sounds like the Patriots aren't really sure if the Cardinals actually intend on moving their young QB.

The Los Angeles Chargers? If there was a pursuit, it was being kept under wraps at the very highest level of the organization. The New York Giants? Despite reports of serious interest, several league sources connected them with drafting Duke’s Daniel Jones rather than trading for Rosen. The New England Patriots? A team source in New England wasn’t fully convinced the Cardinals had settled on trading Rosen. Meanwhile, teams like the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins seemed eager to take themselves out of the Rosen conversation entirely.

For any Rosen trade to happen, the Cardinals first would need to actually decide to move on from the No. 10 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and that's not an easy process.

Trading him presents a risky situation for Arizona. Giving up on a first-rounder just a year after he was drafted could come back to haunt the Cardinals. It certainly would sting to end the Rosen era early only to see him one day flourish in a Josh McDaniels offense in New England.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is sitting there for the Cards to potentially select No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft later this month, but is he a better prospect than Rosen? Should the Cardinals really use a top pick on Murray when they already have a talented young quarterback, in addition to many other roster weaknesses that must be addressed?

The Patriots absolutely should be interested in acquiring Rosen if the price is right because New England still needs a successor to 41-year-old quarterback Tom Brady. The Cardinals, however, shouldn't be willing to jettison from Rosen just yet.
