NFL rumors: Patriots are bringing back QB Cody Kessler to fill 53-man roster

The New England Patriots had 52 players on their roster for Sunday's Week 8 win over the Cleveland Browns, and on Monday they filled the open spot.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Monday the Patriots are signing quarterback Cody Kessler, who will make his return to the team after it waived him Oct. 15.

Kessler will again serve as the third-string quarterback behind starter Tom Brady and rookie backup Jarrett Stidham.

The Patriots, who are the lone unbeaten team left in the AFC at 8-0, will play the Baltimore Ravens on the road in Week 9. Rookie wide receiver N'Keal Harry returned to practice last week and is eligible to play Sunday night versus the Ravens if he's added to the active roster. The Patriots, however, will need to open another roster spot to activate Harry.
