NFL rumors: Latest trade buzz on Jalen Ramsey, Stefon Diggs in Week 5

Share

The two most popular names in NFL trade rumors with Week 5 underway are Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Ramsey reportedly requested a trade after he and Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone clashed on the sideline during Jacksonville's Week 2 loss to the Houston Texans.

The Jaguars have held their ground and refused to deal Ramsey to this point. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning the Jaguars remained "entrenched" in their position to not give up Ramsey. What kind of trade offers have the Jaguars received for him? Quality offers, per Schefter:

The Jaguars have received offers of two first-round picks for Ramsey, but the teams making those offers also wanted a second-round pick back in return along with Ramsey, according to sources.

How does this benefit the New England Patriots?

Well, Ramsey not being dealt to the Kansas City Chiefs (or another top-tier AFC contender) would obviously be great for New England. The Chiefs, like the Patriots, enter Week 5 with a 4-0 record. Kansas City's offense, led by reigning league MVP and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is firing on all cylinders. The Chiefs' defense is improved from 2018, but the unit still isn't one of the 10 or 15 best in the league. The secondary, in particular, is a concern for the Chiefs, so adding a shutdown cornerback of Ramsey's caliber would be a huge upgrade for them and potentially swing the balance of power in the AFC in their favor.

Diggs also doesn't appear to be on the move. Schefter and ESPN colleague Chris Mortensen reported an update on the talented wide receiver's situation Sunday morning:

Despite the unexcused absences, the Vikings are not likely to trade Diggs before the Oct. 29 deadline, although they could revisit trade talks involving the star wide receiver during the offseason, according to league sources.

There are plenty of contending teams across the league that could use an upgrade at wide receiver, including the Patriots, Our own Tom E. Curran reported Wednesday that Minnesota has "no plans" to trade Diggs.

Diggs is in the first season of a five-year, $72 million contract with the Vikings. The 25-year-old wideout enjoyed a stellar 2018 season during which he set career highs with 102 receptions, 1,021 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He's off to a slow start in 2019, but the Vikings offense as a whole has struggled to generate any sort of consistency. A lot of it falls on the shoulders of starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has a lackluster QBR of 29.2 through four games.

The trade deadline is Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. ET.
