A few days after firing a defensive coordinator who couldn't beat the New England Patriots in the playoffs, the Kansas Chiefs have hired one with experience beating Tom Brady and Co. on the Super Bowl stage.
The Chiefs will hire Steve Spagnuolo as their new DC, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Spagnuolo was the Giants defensive coordinator during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, and then again from 2015 through 2017. He played a key role in devising the gameplan that helped the 2007 Giants beat the previously undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Spagnuolo also seems convinced the Patriots had the Eagles' defensive signals in Super Bowl XXXIX when he was Philadelphia's linebackers coach.
The hiring of Spagnuolo comes just two days after the Chiefs announced they fired Bob Sutton as their defensive coordinator. Sutton's defense gave up 37 points in Sunday's AFC Championship Game loss to the Patriots at Arrowhead Stadium. His defense allowed 43 points to the Patriots when New England beat Kansas City in Week 6 at Gillette Stadium.
If the Chiefs had a better defense, they'd probably be preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Instead, it's the Patriots going to Atlanta, where they'll try to win their sixth Super Bowl in franchise history.
