NFL roster cuts: Players released that have ties to the Patriots

The New England Patriots have had to release about 37 players over the course of the past two days, and many Patriots fans have obviously been focused on that. With that said, around the NFL, all teams are trying to get down to that magical number of 53 to set the first iterations of their 53-man rosters. And as a result, some familiar faces will be on the market.

Though the Patriots are cutting plenty of current players from their roster, there are plenty of former Pats that are also hitting the free agent market. They will be worth monitoring solely because of their familiarity with the Patriots system.

This list doesn't contain every player cut that was with the Patriots, as some players across the league may have been with the Patriots for just a few days or a few weeks in any given season. But nonetheless, here are the notable roster cuts with ties to the Patriots.

TE Dwayne Allen, Miami Dolphins. Allen was released by the Patriots earlier in the offseason and signed with the Dolphins. However, he was released with an injury settlement after struggling to stay on the field during the preseason. Allen could garner interest from the Pats once he gets healthy given their lack of depth and talent at tight end.

TE A.J. Derby, New Orleans Saints. Derby was selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Arkansas. He made the team as a depth player but he was traded to the Denver Broncos because there was so much talent in front of him. Perhaps a reunion with the Patriots would make sense to provide more depth at their weakest position.

DE Cassius Marsh, Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots traded for Cassius Marsh during the 2017 offseason but released him midway through the year. In nine games with the team, he logged 16 tackles and a sack. The most notable thing about Marsh was the anti-Patriots comments he made after being traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

WR Cody Hollister, Tennessee Titans. Hollister spent the 2017 with the Patriots practice squad and was on the NFI list in 2018. He signed with the Titans during the 2019 offseason but didn't quite make the team. His twin brother, Jacob Hollister, also played for New England but was traded to the Seahawks during the offseason.

TE Jacob Hollister, Seahawks. How about that? Both Hollister brothers were released during cuts. Jacob had eight catches for 94 yards in two seasons with the Patriots while serving as a depth option for the team. He's another candidate to return to the team and shore up their tight end depth.

DL Geneo Grissom, Saints. Grissom was once a third-round selection by the Patriots out of Oklahoma. He appeared in 38 games with the team and had one sack over the course of four years in New England.

QB/WR Danny Etling, Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots waived Etlng earlier this offseason and were attempting to convert him to receiver when they did so. He's unlikely to return to the team, especially in the wake of the emergence of undrafted players Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olszewski.
