Newest Patriots RB Damien Harris credits pick to Belichick/Saban relationship

The Patriots' newest running back, Damien Harris, out of Alabama, credits the well-known relationship between New England head coach Bill Belichick and University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban for his ending up on the team.

The Patriots selected the Harris in the third round with the 87th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

According to WEEI, on a conference call on Friday, Harris said:

"I think Coach Saban prepares all of his guys to be ready for this next level and be ready for the NFL. Obviously, Coach Saban and Coach Belichick are very similar, they know each other, they’re friends, so I think that on top of Coach Saban being the coach that he is, I think him having that relationship will also help me transition to the NFL and the Patriots and help me be successful."

It's no secret that Belichick and Saban, often referred to as the greatest football minds in their respective leagues, are close.

Belichick was seen spending quite a bit of time around the Alabama skipper during the University of Alabama pro day, so the Pats coach was definitely able to get the skinny on Harris.

Harris joins a crowded Patriots running back group, including last year's first round pick and Super Bowl LIII standout Sony Michel, as the Patriots "running back by committee" approach continues.

Harris is definitely happy to have landed in New England, telling reporters that "Being a part of this organization in and of itself is an honor and a privilege...I’m super excited and super happy to be a part of the Patriots."
