The Jamie Collins trade has not been particularly well-received by fans, a feeling that Tony Massarotti voiced Monday on Felger and Massarotti.
The Pats shipped the 2013 second-round pick to the Browns Monday in a deal that gave them a compensatory third-round pick that will become a fourth-rounder if the Browns don’t have a compensatory selection.
“I can’t stand it,” Massarotti said. “I despise it. I hate it.”
Massarotti’s biggest issue with the deal is that the Patriots could have received a compensatory selection anyway if they kept Collins for the rest of the season and let him leave as a free agent.
“I don’t know how you can possibly like this deal if you’re a Patriots fan,” he said. “What benefit is there for this team really, ultimately, that you wouldn’t have had if you just let Collins go at the end of the year? Because you would have also gotten a compensatory selection had you kept Collins and let him walk.”
Added Massarotti: “Ultimately, you gave Jamie Collins for what amounts to nothing, if you ask me. That’s the way I look at this deal. You would have gotten a compensatory selection had you kept him and let him walk. As it turns out, you will either get a compensatory selection or a fourth-rounder. It’s a wash.”
