Mac Jones is fired up after Patriots draft speedy WR Tyquan Thornton

The New England Patriots are taking care of their quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Patriots used the No. 29 overall pick to select offensive guard Cole Strange, who could be a Day 1 starter on Mac Jones' offensive line. In the second round, New England got Jones a dangerous offensive weapon in Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton.

While Thornton wasn't as highly-touted as some other wideouts still on the board, he's an absolute burner whose 4.28-second 40-yard dash led all receivers at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. And Jones seems quite pleased to have a player like Thornton on his roster.

Here's what Jones posted on his Instagram story shortly after the Patriots took Thornton:

"Let's go!! Speed kills!! #FLCrib!!"" Jones wrote.

Jones and Thornton are both Florida natives, with Jones growing up in Jacksonville before heading to Alabama and Thornton hailing from Miami.

Thornton joins a Patriots wide receiver group that includes Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor and new addition DeVante Parker. He also adds a much-needed vertical dimension to New England's offense, as Jones connected on just 13 passes of 30 or more yards in 2021, tied for 21st in the NFL.

Judging by Jones' reaction, he seems eager to air out a few to Thornton in 2022 -- and Thornton is eager to work with his new QB.

"I watched him at some games at Alabama. He's a stud, man," Thornton said of Jones on Friday night in his introductory conference call. "Just knowing that he's a Florida guy, too. He plays at a high level. He's a great quarterback and I'm excited to get to work with him."
