How the Patriots have fared against the Rams in the Brady-Belichick era

Eric Dickerson, you got your wish. Just remember: Be careful what you wish for.

After their thrilling, come-from-behind -- and controversial -- victory over the Saints in the NFC Championship Game, the Rams are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years.

Eighteen years. As it happens, the Patriots' dynasty is in its 18th year. And, as it happens, that dynasty began with a New England Super Bowl victory over . . . the Rams. They were in St. Louis at the time, but they were the first of the many notches Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have on their belts.

The first Pats-Rams game quarterbacked by Tom Brady was a Sunday night matchup in the 2001 regular season. The Rams prevailed, 24-17, and it was notable in that it was the only time St. Louis/Los Angeles has ever gotten the better of Brady. Brady and the Patriots beat them in the Super Bowl 2 1/2 months later, and after that Brady quarterbacked New England to victories in 2004, 2012 and 2016. (He was injured and out for the season when the Pats beat the Rams in '08.)

Overall Brady has averaged 248 passing yards and a .669 completion percentage against the Rams, with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

A quick look at the team's last two meetings:

Rookie quarterback Jared Goff had a tough time getting anything going against the Patriots defense. New England picked him off twice and held the Rams offense to 162 total yards.

Brady threw for 269 yards and a touchdown while LeGarrette Blount had 88 rushing yards and a touchdown. A pretty easy game for the Patriots, but Goff is a different quarterback this time around. Not to mention his coach is Sean McVay and not Jeff Fisher.

Patriots 45, Rams 7 at Wembley Stadium in London

The Patriots crushed the Rams in this Wembley stadium matchup. Brady threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns, two to Rob Gronkowski. Steven Ridley also carried the football 15 times for 127 yards and a touchdown. Just an all-around great day for the Patriots over the Rams.
