Curran: White getting a crack as third-down back

Day two of Patriots training camp is in the books.

Tom E. Curran and Mike Giardi check in from Gillette Stadium on what they see from Jimmy Garoppolo, the cornerbacks and James White.

"It’s going to be an ongoing situation because what our eyes have seen over the last 15 years is one of the quickest reacting quarterbacks in the NFL with one of the best releases," Curran said, referencing Tom Brady. "Garoppolo can be a hair late and behind some receivers, especially in the red zone, but we’re going to have to continue to look at that. He has to improve it."

One rather more interesting sight was seeing second-year running back James White getting reps with the first team as a third-down back. With Shane Vereen gone, somebody will have to take his place. Could it be White?

"I wasn’t so sure James White would be the answer after Shane Vereen," Curran said. "I didn’t think he was strong enough, he went down on first contact too frequently. But the Pats are going to give him first crack it seems."
