2022 NFL Mock Draft roundup: First-round pick predictions for Patriots

Share

The New England Patriots have drafted pretty well of late, adding premium young talent such as quarterback Mac Jones, running back Rhamondre Stevenson and defensive lineman Christian Barmore in 2021.

The Patriots need this draft success to continue if they're going to take the next step and go from playoff team to legit contender in the AFC.

Unlike last offseason, the Patriots aren't loaded with salary cap space to address their biggest roster weaknesses by spending to acquire some of the top free agents on the market. In fact, they might lose a couple key players in free agency, including No. 1 cornerback J.C. Jackson.

Perry: Can Patriots follow the blueprint of Bengals' offensive shift?

Even if Jackson remains on the franchise tag or a new long-term contract, adding a cornerback with one of their first few picks in the 2022 NFL Draft would be a smart strategy for the Patriots.

Luckily for head coach Bill Belichick and his staff, there are a couple really talented cornerbacks worth pursuing in Round 1.

ESPN draft expert Todd McShay has six cornerbacks ranked inside his top 35 players in the 2022 class. The Patriots haven't had a ton of success drafting cornerbacks of late. Joejuan Williams, Ken Webster, Duke Dawson and Keion Crossen are the last four New England has drafted since 2018.

The 2022 draft class is full of elite defensive talent, though, so there should be plenty of good options for the Patriots by the time they're on the clock with the No. 21 pick.
