The Red Sox added a pitcher, but it's not a front-of-the-rotation starter.

Sean McAdam confirms a report from the Dallas Morning News that the Red Sox are closing in on a one-year deal with right-handed reliever Koji Uehara, formerly of the Rangers.

McAdam also reports the deal "will be worth in the neighborhood of 4.5 million".

Last year with the Rangers, Uehara made 37 appearances, pitching 36.0 innings and giving up 20 hits, three walks and seven earned runs. He struck out 43, had an ERA of 1.75, and WHIP of 0.64.

For his career (2009-2011) which includes two-plus seasons with the Orioles, Uehara has pitched in 157 games. In 211.2 innings, he's given up 166 hits, 29 walks, 68 earned runs, and struck out 231 batters. His career ERA and WHIP are 2.89 and 0.92, respectively.
