Pagliuca: ‘We have stuck to a plan of trying to win championships'

Celtics owners Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca joined "Felger and Mazz" in studio and talked about what they would have done if Kevin Garnett had retired.

"If you had gone totally young, would the fans have been accepting of it?," Tony Massarotti asked Pagliuca.

"I think so because Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has proven he can do it," Pagliuca said. "We have stuck with the plan to try and win win championships."

Pagliuca said other teams have made mistakes and tried to bring in an older player or two for a short-term fix, but he trusts Ainge's ability to build a winner.

Still, without KG, would the Celtics have "blown it up?," Michael Felger asked Grousbeck.

"That's hard to say," Grousbeck answered. "We still would have looked a guy like Jeff Green and said this is a guy we have to have for the future."

Eventually, the owners agreed, a rebuilding will have to happen.

"We're not going to have everybody here when they're 45 years old," Grousbeck said.

The owners pointed to the San Antonio Spurs as an example of a team that has been able to remain a championship contender while remaking its roster year after year.
