While Josh McDaniels said "the book was closed" on him going after a head coaching gig for the 2019 NFL season, it looks like Brian Flores might be writing a book of his own in Miami.
According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Dolphins are expected to hire Flores as their new head coach, replacing Adam Gase.
Should Flores take his talents to South Beach, it will mark the second straight offseason that the Patriots have had to replace their defensive play-caller, following the departure of Matt Patricia to Detroit.
Flores, 37, has been in the Patriots organization since 2004 when he started as a scouting assistant. Since then, he's worked his way up the ranks on the coaching staff and took over defensive playcalling duties from Patricia this season.
As for replacements? In-house candidates include defensive line coach Brendan Daly or cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer, while former Rutgers and Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano could also be a possibility now that he's no longer at Ohio State.
The Dolphins could certainly use a defensive-minded head coach after finishing the 2018 season 29th in total defense (391.1 yards/game), 31st in rushing defense (145.3 yards/game) and 27th in scoring defense (27.1 points/game).
Miami can't officially hire Flores until New England's season is over, and right now he's busy preparing the Patriots' defense for Sunday's AFC Divisional Round matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.
