Team USA just got a little grittier.
According to Shams Charania, Celtics guard Marcus Smart has been added to the 2019 FIBA World Cup training camp roster. Smart will join teammates Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum on the training camp roster, and they'll be three of 15 players battling for 12 roster slots.
Smart's versatility and defensive acumen could provide some value for USA, who may lack some wing depth if players continue to drop out. Smart recorded 5.3 win shares last year for Boston, third-most on the team behind stars Al Horford and Kyrie Irving.
The next addition to Team USA could be Jaylen Brown, whom USA Basketball President Jerry Colangelo recently raved about.
USA Basketball is being forced to tap into replacement players as All-Stars continue to withdraw. On Monday, Bradley Beal and Tobias Harris joined James Harden, Anthony Davis, CJ McCollum and Eric Gordon as key players who dropped out of consideration.
