Hale may leave Sox for Orioles

The Red Sox' protracted managerial search may cost them one of their coaches.

Sox coaches -- while told they may be retained under the new manager -- were given permission to seek other jobs when Terry Francona departed, since the makeup of the 2012 coaching staff wouldn't be finalized until a hire was made. It's now nearly two months since Francona left, with no manager in place, and one of the Sox' coaches may be on his way out.

According Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, DeMarlo Hale -- the Sox' bench coach for the last two years, and their third-base coach from 2006-09 -- may become the Orioles' third-base coach. Hale was a coach in Texas for three years under current Baltimore manager Buck Showalter, and also managed in the Red Sox minor-league system from 1994-99 for current Orioles general manager Dan Duquette.

Hale is still under contract to the Red Sox and would have to be released from the deal in order to go to Baltimore. He recently interviewed for the Cubs' managerial position before Dale Sveum -- whom, ironically, Hale was hired to replace as Boston's third-base coach in 2006 -- was given the job.
