It's never too early to plan ahead, and local wrestling fans are doing just that today.
The WWE will descend on Boston for four straight nights next August, when SummerSlam Week comes to TD Garden. It all starts on Friday, August 21, 2020 with Smackdown LIVE, followed by NXT TakeOver on August 22, SummerSlam on August 23, and Monday Night Raw on August 24.
“We are thrilled to bring WWE’s biggest event of the summer to Boston in 2020,” WWE Executive Vice President, Special Events John P. Saboor said in a press release. “We are grateful to Mayor Walsh, Governor Baker and our partners at TD Garden and look forward to working with them to welcome the world to one of America’s great sports and entertainment cities.”
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh echoed the WWE's excitement: “On behalf of the City of Boston, we are excited to once again host WWE SummerSlam at TD Garden. SummerSlam attracts fans from all across the world, and we are excited to welcome them all to our city for this hallmark WWE event."
The Garden also hosted SummerSlam in 2006, but there was some thought to different venues this time around.
According to Sports Illustrated, Fenway Park was considered, but the logistics of setting up a major four-day event during the Red Sox season proved challenging. Gillette Stadium was reportedly not an option due to weather concerns, though SI reports that Gillette could look into hosting Wrestlemania in the future.
