BC, Harvard, Vermont earn NIT berths

For the first time since 2011, Boston College is playing tournament basketball.

The Eagles, 19-15 and who advanced to the ACC semifinals after an upset of North Carolina State, were selected to the NIT Sunday night and will play at Western Kentucky on Tuesday night. BC is a No. 5 seed in the tourney.

Harvard, which lost a heartbreaker to Penn in the finals of the first-ever Ivy League tournament, also earned an NIT berth and will play at Marquette on Wednesday.

One other New England school, Vermont, was selected to the NIT. The Catamounts will play at Middle Tennessee on Tuesday night.

For a second straight year, there won't be any Massachusetts teams in the NCAA Tournament, but there will be some postseason college hoops featuring local teams this season.

Boston College and Harvard were both selected to the NIT on Sunday night, as revealed on the tournament's selection show.

The Eagles, who made a step forward this season after going 19-15 this season and advancing to the ACC tournament quarterfinals, were selected as a No. 5 seed. They will face No. 4 seed Western Kentucky in the first round.Β 

It's BC's first postseason appearance since the 2011 NIT.

Hours after losing a heartbreaker in the Ivy League championship, Harvard was selected as an NIT automatic qualifier after winning the conference's regular-season championship. The Crimson are a No. 7 seed and will open the tournament against No. 2 Marquette.
