Tatum named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month


BOSTON – Jayson Tatum has been named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month, the NBA announced on Thursday.

He becomes the first Celtic to receive the award since Marcus Smart in February of 2015.


Tatum, 19, started 17 games in December and averaged 14.6 points on 52.9 percent shooting from the field and 45.1 percent from 3-point range. In that span, he had 14 games with at least 10 points which led all rookies.

For the season, he’s averaging 14.1 points per game to go with 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 31.1 minutes. In addition, his 46.8 percent shooting from 3-point range is third in the NBA.

Selected by with the third overall pick in last June’s NBA draft, Tatum has scored 579 points through his first 41 games which ranks fifth all-time among Celtics rookies.

Utah guard Donovan Mitchell was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December.
