Shaq to NBA free agents: ‘Boston is the '

Shaquille O’Neal said that he feels the Celtics are “one or two players away” from being a title contender while speaking at The Tradition at TD Garden Tuesday.

One way to get those players is in the draft, and depending on how the Nets fare, the Celtics could use Brooklyn’s 2017 first-round pick to cash in on some top talent.

Or, as they did with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, they could trade for star players. It’s that last way that’s been something of a toughie in Boston.

Al Horford became the exception to the rule among key NBA free agents when he signed with the C’s this summer. Though the Celtics were a surprising candidate for the services of Kevin Durant, they missed out on the star forward when he chose Golden State.

Asked about the perception that free agents don’t like to choose Boston, O’Neal gave a strong-if-inappropriate endorsement of the city in which he played the final season of his career.

“Hey, free agents, Boston is the [expletive],” Shaq said. “Trust me. It’s a great town.”
