Report: Celtics in contract discussions with second-round pick Carsen Edwards

So far during the Boston Celtics summer league, the team has performed very well en route to two victories.

Fan-favorite Tacko Fall, who has used his 7-foot-6 frame to make some unfathomable plays and has completed a few easy dunks in his first couple outings, has captured the attention of many thanks to his performance. But as a result, another impressive rookie's success has been a bit understated.

Carsen Edwards, a second-round pick (34th overall) out of Purdue, has flashed top-notch scoring potential, averaging 17 points per game in his first two summer league outings. And thanks to his performance, he seems to have locked up a roster spot.

According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, the Celtics have been engaged in contract discussions with Edwards and have explored a few different contracts related to guarantees.

The Celtics trying to sign Edwards is hardly a surprise. After all, the team did spend the 34th pick on him and he was thought to be a potential first-round talent in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Celtics could have gotten a steal by moving down to select him, so having him on the roster certainly makes sense.

Additionally, the Celtics have an opening for their backup point guard job. With both Kyrie Irving and Terry Rozier departing in the offseason, the Celtics now have an open competition for their backup point guard job. Edwards will likely battle veteran Brad Wanamaker, who was re-signed during the offseason, for the right to be Walker's backup. Marcus Smart may also factor into the playing time at the position, but Edwards will at least have a chance to earn the role.

Who will Celtics face in first round? It’s likely a two-team race

The Celtics still have to sign all of their rookies, as they have yet to agree to deals with first-round picks Romeo Langford and Grant Williams while second-round guards Edwards and Tremont Waters remain unsigned. We'll see how they choose to build out these contracts moving forward, but it does seem that Edwards will be signed to the team's 15-man roster.
