No Aron Baynes (ankle) for Celtics tonight in Chicago

BOSTON – The Celtics will be down one big man tonight against Chicago with Aron Baynes being ruled out by the team this morning.

The 6-foot-10 center suffered a left ankle sprain in the early going of Boston’s 128-100 win over New York on Thursday.

Al Horford was a late addition to the injury report. He's listed as questionable with knee soreness. If he can't go, and without Baynes, the Celtics might have to resort to a small-ball lineup. Rookie big man Robert Williams is not with the team in Chicago after the birth of his first child on Thursday.

Without Baynes, the Celtics players most likely to benefit from that move playing time-wise are Daniel Theis and potentially Guerschon Yabusele.

The absence of Baynes takes away one of the NBA’s top interior frontcourt defenders, evident by Baynes having the league’s best overall defensive rating last season and still ranking among the NBA’s leaders in that category through the early stages of this season.

It is unclear if the injury will keep him out for an extended period of time.

In 21 games this season, Baynes has averaged 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds, along with a defensive rating of 97.6, which is tops among all centers that play at least 14 minutes per game.
