Nike unveils Celtics ‘City Edition' uniform

The Celtics' new "City Edition" uniforms released by Nike on Wednesday are gray, but a much lighter shade than the alternates they have worn in recent years (see Marcus Smart photo, below) - and, thankfully, there are no sleeves.

Nike, in its first year as the NBA uniform supplier, has done away with traditional home and away uniforms. The Celtics have worn black, white and green uniforms home and away this season.

Here's Nike's description of the "City Edition" uni, which pays tribute to Red Auerbach and the Garden's parquet floor and has a 2008 championship banner as a belt buckle:

"The Celtics City Edition uniform pays tribute to this unique hardwood floor and the man credited with starting the dynasty, Red Auerbach. The belt buckle is accentuated with the iconic banner design to match the crowded TD Garden rafters and highlights the Celtics’ most recent NBA Championship in 2008. Gray, the color of unity, was incorporated in the uniform to signify the large regional fan base spread across New England that rallies behind the Celtics year in and out."
