NBA to implement coach's challenge system for 2019-20 season

The NBA is making some major changes to its replay review system for the 2019-20 season.

On Tuesday, the league announced it will implement a Coach's Challenge system similar to the NFL's on a one-year trial basis. The NBA Board of Governors unanimously voted in favor of that change, as well as the NBA Replay Center having the ability to trigger instant replays in some circumstances.

The NBA Board of Governors today unanimously approved two changes to instant replay rules. The first change is the introduction of a Coach's Challenge to trigger instant replay review of a limited set of matters. A version of the Coach's Challenge that has been in effect in the NBA G League for the last two seasons and is being used at MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019 will be adopted in the NBA on a one-year trial basis during the 2019-20 season.

The second change enables the NBA Replay Center (in addition to the on-court referees) to trigger instant replay in certain circumstances. The process, which was successfully tested at MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2018 and is being used again at this year's event, will be implemented for the 2019-20 NBA season.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, some of the situations in which challenges will be permitted are personal fouls charged to the coach’s team, out-of-bounds violations, and goaltending and basket-interference violations.

The NBA has tested coach's challenges during Summer League and in the G-League last season. Coaches will be limited to only one challenge per game, so Brad Stevens and Co. will be forced to use them wisely.
