NBA star Trae Young gives Celtics' Tremont Waters a shoutout for G-League award

One of the NBA's most exciting players gave a Twitter shoutout to Boston Celtics two-way player Tremont Waters for winning the G-League's 2019-20 Rookie of the Year Award.

The G-League revealed Waters was the winner on Thursday. He's the fourth Maine Red Claws player to win the award. Waters averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 36 games for the Red Claws this season.

Waters received plenty of praise for his accomplishment, including a tweet from Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young.

Waters and Young were two of the best point guards in the 2017 college basketball recruiting class, and they even played against each other in AAU competition. Young and Waters have similar styles of play as point guards. Waters, like Young, isn't afraid to pull up and shoot deep 3-point shots.

Young was the No. 5 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and started in the All-Star Game for the first time this season. His 29.6 points per game rank third in the league, and he's second in assists with 9.3 per game. Waters has yet to make a substantial impact for the Celtics, but his time is likely coming. After an impressive debut in the G-League, Waters could have an opportunity to earn a permanent spot on Boston's roster next season, especially if he can be more consistent from 3-point range.
