Isaiah Thomas: Celtics have come ‘a long way' in his two years

In some ways, Isaiah Thomas is a relative newcomer to Boston. He's only been with the Celtics for a little more than two years.

In others, he's been here a lifetime.

"A long way," Thomas said Wednesday night when asked how far the Celtics had come since he was acquired from Phoenix at the 2015 trade deadline. "They definitely [weren't] thinking No. 1 seed when I got here. I know that for fact. They [were] barely thinking playoffs."

But now they have that No. 1 seed. Wednesday's 112-94 victory over the Bucks enabled the Celtics to clinch the best record in the Eastern Conference at 53-29.

As Thomas says, 'a long way' from the team that was 20-31, and ranked 12th in the conference, on Feb. 19, 2015, the day he was acquired.

"How fast it's come is good," he said. "It says a lot about the direction this organization is going in and the work we put in as players and as coaches."

And Thomas doesn't take it for granted.

"It's very special," he said. "I mean, for me it is. I've never been a No. 1 seed so it's definitely something that I'm excited about."

Excited, yes. But not surprised.

"I did," he said with a smile when asked if he thought before the season that the Celtics would be in this position. "But I mean, I'm different from others."

And now?

"We want more. The previous years, we just kind of wanted to make the playoffs and see what happened. Now we want to advance, and advance as far as possible."
