Here's why Kenan Thompson (and the rest of us) can't do a good LaVar Ball impression

During a summer edition of SNL’s Weekend Update on Thursday, the great Kenan Thompson did an impression of LaVar Ball. He joined Colin Jost, who routinely does a not-so-convincing impression of a handsome person.

Check it out below.

Deadspin, who is wrong, posted that the impression is “pretty good.” If “pretty good” means “done in the same language Ball speaks (English),” then yes, it’s pretty good. In fact, it’s really good.

Yet if “pretty good” means “pretty good,” then Thompson’s impression isn’t close to pretty good. The reason: LaVar Ball can’t really be replicated because LaVar Ball has one of the most charming smiles in the world, and if Kenan Thompson could smile like that he would just make it his regular smile.

He’s got such a good smile that he’s even kind of smiling when he’s arguing.

Most importantly, he’s got this smile he goes into when he’s at the end of a sentence. Where people put periods, he puts this little grin. It’s very endearing. He did it a bunch at the NBA Draft.

Thompson's impression managed to check some of the other boxes. He was loud, brash, overconfident.

Yet he didn't even attempt those smiles, and for good reason. If he or any of us could smile like LaVar Ball we would ditch our actual smiles in a second.
