Ex-Celtics assistant lands prominent head coach job in Australia

Former Boston Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison has landed an impressive new gig.

The Perth Wildcats of Australia's National Basketball League announced Morrison as their new head coach Tuesday.

Ironically, Morrison shares the name of Australia's current prime minister. But Morrison the basketball coach has a chance to make a name for himself with the Wildcats, who are the NBL's most popular and successful team with 10 championships.

A Prince Edward Island, Canada, native, Morrison was the head coach of the Celtics' G-League affiliate team in Maine from 2014 to 2017 and won the developmental league's Head Coach of the Year award in 2015.

What is the Celtics' identity? Stevens lays out clear vision

He joined the Celtics as an assistant coach in 2017 and worked on Brad Stevens' staff until this summer, when Stevens transitioned to president of basketball operations and named Ime Udoka the new head coach.

"Outside of the NBA, the Perth Wildcats head coach position was one of the best available in the world," Morrison said in a statement. "Perth is a great city in an English-speaking country, making it an easy transition for my family. Any time you get a great career opportunity and a great opportunity for your family, you have to go for it."

Following Morrison's departure, Joe Mazzulla is the only Celtics assistant coach remaining from last year's staff. Udoka has hired several new assistants, including Damon Stoudamire and Will Hardy.
