Could Kyrie Irving miss extended time with “unique” eye injury?

Kyrie Irving won't play Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but that might not be the only game he misses.

Head coach Brad Stevens revealed Wednesday on 98.5 The Sports Hub that Irving's absence could extend beyond Wednesday as he recovers from an eye injury.

Stevens didn't sound optimistic about Irving's situation, either.

"He got swiped across the face, and it was a unique deal because it got both eyes," the Celtics head coach said on the "Zolak & Bertrand" show. "The right eye was the initial concern with the corneal abrasion. The left eye had some inflammation (Wednesday), so he was not feeling good."

San Antonio Spurs forward Marco Belinelli inadvertently scratched Irving in the face during their matchup Monday, and while the C's guard is receiving antibiotics as treatment, it sounds like he's still in discomfort.

"We watched film for an hour and a half in my office (Tuesday), and he was wearing sunglasses," Stevens said of Irving. "He's not doing so hot when he takes those sunglasses off."

Stevens added Irving will be re-evaluated Thursday and there's no definitive timetable for his return.

Boston obviously would like Irving back as soon as possible; he's the team's leading scorer by a wide margin (23.1 points per game compared to Jayson Tatum's 16.2 points) and has been excellent in clutch situations lately.

Any time Irving misses would provide an opportunity for Terry Rozier, who shined in a starting role late last season after the All-Star point guard was shut down.
