Celtics Talk: Digesting Boston's Wild Deadline Day

Another trade deadline has come and gone in the NBA, and the Boston Celtics were among the league's biggest movers and shakers.

In separate deals, Boston shipped out Josh Richardson, Dennis Schroder, Romeo Langford, Bruno Fernando, Enes Freedom and a series of draft picks in exchange for Derrick White and Daniel Theis, who'll be returning for his second stint with the team.

Are the Celtics a better team with the re-shaped roster?

When it comes to White, a 27-year-old combo guard who joins the Celtics after spending the first four-and-a-half seasons of his career with the San Antonio Spurs, Forsberg seems quite bullish.

"I'm very excited about what he can do defensively," Forsberg said. "The Celtics have shown they have a defensive identity right now. I'm eager to see what Derrick White can bring; he's also a great playmaker, 5.6 assists per game."

The 29th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, White was averaging 14.4 points per game for San Antonio in 2021-22 on 42.6 percent shooting from the floor, including 31.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Theis, meanwhile, rejoins the Celtics less than a year after he was traded to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal. The Bulls in turn sent Theis to the Houston Rockets over the summer, who have since shipped him back to Boston. How might he fit back in with the Green?

"It allows you to have an incredible amount of defensive versatility with this team," Scalabrine said. "You can have a lineup with Al Horford and Theis. You can have Rob Williams and Theis. Grant Williams could slide in there. What Theis provides, he can be a 5-man, he can be a rim runner, he can stretch the floor. He is the perfect 5-man for what you need right now."

Even though the deadline has come and gone, the Celtics may not be done adding to their roster -- especially coming off of six straight wins to move up into seventh in the Eastern Conference. What might the buyout market look like for Boston?

With defending players like Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers -- and any number of Milwaukee Bucks big men -- in mind, Scal said he's like to see Robin Lopez, Derrick Favors or Tacko Fall, in that order.

Forsberg had a different line of thinking.

"Honestly? I don't want anybody. I'm so worried that veteran players are gonna get time over the young guys," Forsberg said. "It's more important to the long-term future of this franchise to find out what they've got."
