Celtics coach Ime Udoka provides update on Robert Williams' injury rehab

Robert Williams III is making progress in his rehab from knee surgery.

The Boston Celtics center underwent a procedure last week to repair a meniscus tear in his knee. The team announced that his expected recovery time is four to six weeks.

Celtics head coach Ime Udoka provided an update Wednesday on Williams' rehab so far.

"We left him back in Boston to kind of expedite the process, although he could have done it here," Udoka told reporters. "He's a guy who's locked in with the guys, so it's better to leave him (in Boston) and get the process rolling as fast as possible.

"He's in really good spirits. His first surgery -- so he's attacking it with the right mindset. Looking forward to having him back sooner than later."

The Celtics have three games left in the regular season, including Wednesday night's matchup versus the Bulls in Chicago.

Even though Williams hasn't officially been ruled out for the first round of the playoffs, it's unlikely the 24-year-old center will be ready to play before Round 2.

“We haven’t looked at him being here for the first round, honestly,” Udoka said. “(Four to six weeks) timeline is what it is, and everybody kind of reacts differently to surgeries, but if possible, we haven’t really ruled him out, obviously being if he’s ready, but we’re going in with the mindset that he won’t be there for the first round.”

The Celtics have the best defensive rating (106.1) in the NBA and Williams is a major reason why. He was among the top candidates for Defensive Player of the Year before his injury based on his shot blocking, low-post defense, rebounding, etc.

Williams averaged career highs with 10 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game this season. His 61 games played in the regular season also is a career high.

The first round of the playoffs begin April 16, although it's possible the Celtics could begin their postseason journey on April 17. The schedule for the playoffs has not yet been announced.
