NEW YORK -- The Red Sox' kiddie corps came to the rescue again.
The Sox erupted for four runs in the top of the 11th inning, with all of the contributions coming from players 25 and under, sending the Red Sox to their sixth straight win, a back-and-forth 9-5 victory over the New York Yankees.
The 11th began with a base hit by Travis Shaw, who scooted to third on a hit-and-run single by Blake Swihart. Jackie Bradley then bunted home Swihart with a sacrifice, providing some insurance and Mookie Betts later added a two-run homer, his second homer of the night.
The win prevented the Yankees, who have lost three in a row, from clinching a wild card spot. The Yanks got some help from losses by the Twins and Angels, but couldn't get a win of their own to seal things.
They also again fell short of winning the 10,000th game in franchise history.
At one point, the Boston bullpen issued six walks - one intentional - in the span of 10 Yankee hitters. But the relievers ultimately allow just one run over the final six innings.
The two teams traded solo homers in the middle innings -- No. 33 for Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth; No. 17 for Betts in the top of the seventh - to forge a 5-5 tie.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox had built a 4-1 lead, but the Yankees stormed back in the fifth to tie it off starter Wade Miley, who struggled with his command.
Miley issued three walks and threw a wild pitch in the fifth, his final inning of work. Two of the runs scored - on an infield single and fielder's choice -- without the ball leaving the infield.
As they did on Tuesday night, the Red Sox raced out to a quick lead in the first inning and used the long ball to get on the board against Masahiro Tanaka.
After two were out, Xander Bogaerts singled and David Ortiz walked, Shaw drove a line drive into the right field seats for a three-run homer. The blast was Shaw's 13th of the season and second in as many nights.
