Verdugo earns praise from Big Papi for big day vs. Twins

Alex Verdugo's performance in Wednesday's doubleheader vs. the Minnesota Twins got the attention of one of his childhood idols.

Verdugo was the MVP of both Boston Red Sox victories, making a game-winning diving grab in Game 1 and hitting the go-ahead two-run single and a solo home run in Game 2. Red Sox legend David Ortiz took notice and had a message for the 24-year-old on Twitter.

Tomase: Picking a Red Sox MVP is easy -- it's Alex Cora

That has to be pretty surreal for Verdugo, who said last year after joining the Red Sox that Ortiz was his "main guy" growing up as a baseball fan. Of course, the tweet probably pales in comparison to the hug he got to give Big Papi after meeting him in Fort Myers.

Verdugo now is slashing .273/.340/.500 with two homers and eight RBIs through 11 games played. The Red Sox are 9-3 and riding a nine-game win streak.
