Twitter lost its collective mind over infuriating Red Sox-Rays delay

Wednesday's getaway game between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays was cruising along just fine.

Then Rays ruined everything.

It all started in the top of the eighth inning, when Tampa Bay reliever Adam Kolarek took over for starter Charlie Morton. After Kolarek retired pinch-hitter Sam Travis, Rays manager Kevin Cash replaced him with right-hander Chaz Roe ... but kept Kolarek in the game by having him play first base.

After Roe got Mookie Betts to fly out, Cash tried to put Kolarek back on the mound to face lefty batter Rafael Devers, taking Roe out of the game and bringing in Nate Lowe at first base.

Cash's ploy thoroughly confused the umpiring crew, leading to a ridiculous 15-minute delay that ended with one swing after Devers grounded out on the first pitch he saw from Kolarek.

Needless to say, Twitter wasn't happy with another Red Sox game grinding to a halt. In fact, the Red Sox Twitter account led the charge.

When the game finally resumed, the Sox fired off one more angry tweet (which drew a snarky reply from the Rays).

But Boston's frustration was benign compared to the rest of the Twitterverse, which ripped crew chief Angel Hernandez, the state of baseball in the 21st century and everything else related to Wednesday's mess.

Oh, and 98.5 The Sports Hub's Mike Felger didn't enjoy it, either.

The Sox lost 3-2 but officially protested the game, which somehow took *only* three hours and 11 minutes despite the delay.

As long as MLB spares us having to watch any more umps huddled around a black box.
