Tomase: Reasons to be optimistic about the Red Sox

Over the past month the Boston Red Sox have made up some serious ground in the American League East and will have the chance to make a bigger splash over the weekend against the New York Yankees.

The way things have gone, John Tomase of WEEI.com believes there's still hope for the Red Sox as they get closer to the All-Star break.

"The division is sort of crumbling. They've made up nine games on Tampa in the last two and a half weeks," said Tomase. "If you look at their offensive players up and down the lineup they all have track records of being better second half players than first - outside of Ryan Hanigan. I believe they will make a trade to shore up the starting rotation, and they still have Brian Johnson. So I think there are enough reasons to at least have hope that they can stay in it."
