Defense has always been Rafael Devers' main weakness over the course of his Red Sox career, but over the past two months, he's played like a two-way star.
As Justin Long of the Red Sox points out, Devers has been the best defensive third baseman in the American League.
After committing 10 errors in the first 31 games of the season, Devers has only made three errors over the last 55 games (149 chances). In that 55-game stretch, he leads all AL third baseman in fielding percentage (.980) and only trails Nolan Arenado (.983) for the best fielding percentage in baseball.
Devers is in the midst of a breakout campaign in 2019. He was not included on the AL All-Star roster for whatever reason, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Devers has been one of the most consistent sources of offense for an up and down Red Sox team. He currently sports a .327/.380/.557 slash line to go along with 17 home runs and 64 RBI.
The AL MVP is most likely out of the question for anyone not named Mike Trout, but Devers if Devers can sustain this kind of two-way impact and build upon it for seasons to come, it raises the ceiling on a team that already has the ability to win a championship. Especially with the upcoming contract decisions on J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts.
