The Boston Red Sox placed catcher Christian Vazquez on the bereavement list prior to Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, catcher Connor Wong has been recalled from Triple-A Worcester.
Catcher Kevin Plawecki is in the starting lineup and batting sixth for the Red Sox on Wednesday.

There is no timetable for the return of Vazquez, who's hitting .254 with four homers 37 RBIs in 100 games this season.
Wong, who made his major league debut earlier this season, is hitting just .183 with two homers and 10 RBIs over 27 games with Worcester. He was one of three players Boston received from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Mookie Betts trade last year.
The Red Sox have lost 11 of their last 14 games and have fallen five games behind the Rays in the American League East standings.
