Multiple sources report the Red Sox are nearing an agreement with right-handed reliever Matt Albers, a free agent who spent last season with the Orioles after starting his major-league career with the Astros.
Albers, who will be 28 next year, was 5-3 with a 4.52 ERA in 62 appearances with Baltimore in 2010.
Peter Gammons reported on NESN Tuesday night that the deal is done, though the team has issued no official conformation.
The Boston Herald reports that the Sox remain interested in ex-Rockies and Angels closer Brian Fuentes, who finished last year as the Twins' setup man. According to ESPN Boston, the Sox are going to miss out on Kevin Gregg, another reliever in whom they had interest, as Gregg is close to signing a two-year contract with Baltimore.
