After getting the final out Friday night in painful fashion - by taking a comebacker off his pitching arm and then throwing to first for the out - Koji Uehara won't be available to close for the Red Sox on Saturday night in Detroit, the Providence Journal reports.
Postgame X-rays on Friday showed a bruise on Uehara's right forearm, but no fracture.
More from the Journal's Brian MacPherson:
Koji Uehara was "sore" and not available to pitch on Saturday night, John Farrell said, one day after he absorbed a line drive to his right wrist on the final play of the game. Uehara is not likely to be available to pitch on Sunday, either.
"My whole body is a glove once I release the ball," Uehara said through an interpreter after the game.
"That's the first I've heard of that," Farrell said with a chuckle. "I was amazed he was able to complete the play given the impact."
With Uehara out, Junichi Tazawa and the newly acquired Jean Machi were under consideration to close should a save situation arise. Farrell said.
