BOSTON - With Ryan Hanigan as the only healthy option off the bench in Friday night's game, the Red Sox needed to add some depth for the remainder of the series.
They did that on Saturday by optioning reliever Jonathan Aro to Pawtucket and calling up infielder Travis Shaw.
It's Shaw's fifth call-up of the season, as he's gone 3-for-15 with two runs and walk in nine games for the Sox. In that time, he's played five games at first base, three games at third base, and one game in left field.
In 77 games for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .249 with five home runs and 30 RBI including a .298 batting average in his last 43 Triple-A games dating back to May 20.
Shaw will start at third for the injured Pablo Sandoval on Saturday.
"With Panda's situation being day to day, we needed some infield depth," John Farrell said. "He's a third base today. Panda is showing some improvement. He's going to try to swing the bat here a little bit later this morning. But the soreness and swelling still persists. So whether or not he's available in this series remains to be seen."
Hanley Ramirez was also out of Friday's game but returns to the lineup on Saturday in left field and batting cleanup.
With Ramirez back in the lineup, the Sox hope they can continue to score runs at a good rate. They've totaled 40 runs in the last six days, which is two-and-a-half times their total in their previous nine games following the All-Star break.
The Sox have scored seven or more runs in four of their last six games, their same total of seven-plus run outputs in their previous 32 games from Jun. 17 to Jun. 25.
