The Red Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Hector Velazquez, 28, from Campeche of the Mexican League on Saturday. His minor league deal is pending a physical.
Velazquez has never pitched in the major leagues. He started 14 games for Mayos de Navojoa this winter, with a 2.32 ERA in 85 1/3 innings with 87 strikeouts. He had five scoreless starts of at least five innings.
In the 2016 season, Velazquez went 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA, 120 strikeouts and 16 walks in 22 starts for Monclova of the Mexican League on a loan from his original team Campeche.
Velazquez was 43-29 with a 3.76 ERA in 136 appearances (120 starts) in seven Mexican League seasons.
